Flight Details
- Airline: Singapore Airlines
- Class: Premium Economy
- Route: Singapore (SIN) to New York (JFK)
- Aircraft: Airbus A350-900ULR
Having recently survived a grueling 29-hour journey from Buenos Aires to Shanghai, I felt mentally fortified to tackle a true bucket-list route: the world’s longest non-stop commercial flight from Singapore Changi (SIN) to New York (JFK).
This route is operated by Singapore Airlines’ specialized Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range). It’s a premium-heavy bird built to stay airborne for up to 20 hours,, featuring 67 Business Class seats and 94 Premium Economy seats. You won’t find a basic economy cabin here.
But before we even took off, there was a major plot twist to address.
Full Disclosure: The “Flagged” Passenger Dilemma
I like to keep things 100% transparent on this blog. Singapore Airlines has me flagged in their system.
Whenever I book a ticket with them, my name is highlighted, and the cabin crew is briefed on my presence. While some might chalk this up to “main character syndrome”, a crew member previously confirmed this directly to me. It usually results in extra attention, like being served first to ensure I get my first choice of meals.. However, even when I fly them incognito or look at their performance objectively, Singapore Airlines consistently proves why they are globally ranked among the elite.
The Best Seat in the Industry: The Solo Seat
If you are booking Premium Economy on the ULR, you need to look at the very back of the cabin. For an extra $168 USD, you can book one of the highly coveted individual solo seats (Seats 40C or 41C, for example).
Because the aircraft’s fuselage narrows at the rear, the airline removed the aisle seats, leaving single thrones right against the window. It features a massive side storage console,, incredible privacy, and plenty of legroom. It feels more like a regional business class seat than a premium economy product.
18 Hours of Catering: A Masterclass in In-Flight Dining
SQ allows you to use their “Book the Cook” service up to 48 hours before departure to choose your meals.
- Meal 1 (Lunch):Â A premium economy style beef dish served with a fresh starter and dessert. The sizing was excellent, and the flavors were spot-on.
- Meal 2 (Dinner): Around 10 hours into the flight, I was served a local Singaporean dish that I pre-ordered online. I am not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best meals I have ever had on a plane . The flavors were vibrant and complex—it was pure joy to eat at 35,000 feet.
The Lowlight: The 18-Hour Omission
Despite the ticket price and the sheer length of the journey, Singapore Airlines does not provide amenity kits in Premium Economy. For an 18-hour ultra-long-haul flight, leaving out basic comfort items like eye shades, toothbrushes, or lip balm feels like a bizarre oversight for a legacy carrier. You’ll need to pack your own essentials for this marathon route.
The Verdict
An 18-hour flight sounds terrifying, but on this aircraft and specifically in the solo seat, the time flew by as if it were nothing.
A huge shout-out to Howard, the Cabin Manager on this flight, who went above and beyond to provide exceptional service to everyone in the cabin. If you have to make the trek between Southeast Asia and the US East Coast, the ULR solo seat is worth every single penny.
