Flight Details
- Airline: IndiGo
- Class: IndiGo Stretch (Business Class)
- Route: Mumbai (BOM) to Athens (ATH)
- Aircraft: Airbus A321XLR
IndiGo recently launched its flagship international route onboard the brand-new Airbus A321XLR, introducing their “Stretch” business class product to connect Mumbai and Athens. Having flown their Stretch class before with mixed impressions, I booked myself on this 8-hour journey to see if India’s largest carrier could step up its game. The short answer? Beautiful new hardware completely ruined by bad crew communication, chaotic ground handling, and indifferent service.
Check-in & Ground Experience
The journey started on a high note at Mumbai Terminal 2. The dedicated check-in counter for IndiGo Stretch passengers was fast and efficient.
However, things went downhill quickly from there:
The Lounge: Stretch ticket holders get access to the Adani Lounge. Unfortunately, the lounge remains a disappointment—it feels run-down, dirty, and poorly maintained. Staff rarely clear tables, making it unhygienic enough that I skipped food altogether, grabbed a quick coffee, and stocked up on bottled water.
Boarding Chaos: IndiGo sells priority boarding as a primary Stretch perk, but as is typical with the airline, it was completely unenforced. At the bus gate, passengers were pushing, and there was zero organization. To make matters worse, we sat crammed inside the apron bus for over 20 minutes because the crew hadn’t arrived at the aircraft yet.
Cabin & Seat
The cabin hardware on this factory-fresh A321XLR is actually quite solid for a budget carrier’s premium product.
- Comfort & Tech: Legroom is generous, the seat cushion is comfortable, and you get a sturdy tray table along with universal power and USB-C charging ports.
- In-Flight Entertainment: IndiGo offers a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) streaming system loaded with movies and TV shows. While there’s no live Wi-Fi, the streaming system works well without needing to download an external app beforehand—the crew can provide a direct QR code. The only minor design flaw is a lack of a dedicated device holder on the seatback.
- Amenities: Stretch passengers receive a blanket and a customizable amenity kit (including a toothbrush kit, which came in very handy post-meal).
In-Flight Service & Food
This is where the entire experience derailed.
- Crew Attitude: There was virtually no hospitality. Boarding greetings were nonexistent. When the welcome drink was delivered, it was dumped on the console without a simple “hello” or “welcome aboard.” The crew lacked basic communication skills and seemed to treat passengers as a minor inconvenience.
- Meal Confusion: Early in the flight, the crew handed out printed menus, only to return moments later with an unannounced, mandatory vegetarian snack. They didn’t ask if passengers wanted it, nor did they explain that the actual menu items couldn’t be ordered until much later into the 8-hour flight. (The snack itself was poor).
- The Highlight: Service wasn’t a total loss. Prior to the main meal, the crew brought out hot towels. For the main dish, I ordered IndiGo’s Signature Biryani, which was absolute perfection—fragrant, delicious, and well-portioned. The accompanying dessert was equally impressive.
- Lavatories: Despite the aircraft being just a few weeks old, the lavatory was untidy early in the flight and was never checked or cleaned by the crew throughout the 8-hour flight.
Final Verdict
At $850 USD, IndiGo Stretch on the XLR is far from cheap. For that price point, you can frequently find legacy international carriers offering a complete, full-service product.
IndiGo has great aircraft hardware and a surprisingly solid main hot meal. However, their crew training and customer engagement are severely lacking.
Communication was nonexistent, ground benefits were unenforced, and the cabin crew gave off the impression that they would rather be anywhere else than serving passengers. IndiGo needs to train their crew to match premium cabin expectations, or manage passenger expectations better upfront.
