Lufthansa’s New First Class: A Game-Changer or a PR Disaster Finally Fixed?

Flight Details

  • Airline: Lufthansa
  • Class: First Class
  • Route: Munich (MUC) to Frankfurt (FRA) via Chicago (ORD)
  • Aircraft: Airbus A350-900 & Airbus A340-600

After years of delays, certification issues, and what can only be described as a massive PR headache for the airline, the Lufthansa “Allegris” First Class is finally here. To see if it lives up to the hype, I decided to do a side-by-side battle: the brand-new product on the Airbus A350 (Munich to Chicago) versus the iconic “Old” First Class on the A340-600 (Chicago to Frankfurt).

At a total cost of $6,600 USD for the return trip, the stakes were high. Is it worth the investment? Let’s break it down.

The Lounge Battle: Munich vs. Frankfurt

If you’re flying the new Allegris product, you’ll likely be departing from Munich, and that is where the elite experience begins. The Lufthansa First Class Lounge in Munich is world-class. With an à la carte menu, a cigar lounge, and staff who are genuinely highly trained and professional, it rivals the likes of Qatar or Emirates.

In contrast, the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt while famous for its private sleeping rooms and bathtubs was a major letdown in the service department. The staff were unfriendly and made me feel like an inconvenience. The only saving grace? Being driven directly to your plane in a private car. That never gets old.

The Seat: Privacy vs. Classic Comfort

  • The New Allegris (A350): This is a massive leap forward. The suite features high walls and a door for total privacy. It’s packed with tech, including a massive screen and an iPad to control the seat functions. One unique feature? There are no overhead lockers, giving the cabin an incredibly airy feel; instead, you have a massive ottoman to store your belongings.
  • The Old First Class (A340/747): This is a very open-concept cabin. While it feels classy, it lacks the privacy of modern standards. In 2026, it honestly feels more like a very high-end business class than a true first class. However, if you have an empty seat next to you, you can use one for sitting and the other as a dedicated bed.

Dining: Caviar, Sea Bass, and “Heavenly” Dessert

Lufthansa hasn’t lost its touch when it comes to catering. The signature caviar service remains a highlight on both flights, and they aren’t stingy with the portions!

On the Allegris flight, I had a pan-fried sea bass that was presented beautifully, followed by what I can only describe as the best dessert I’ve ever had on a plane a Bavarian treat that was absolute heaven. On the old product, the freshly prepared eggs with bacon for breakfast remain a 10/10 signature dish that no other airline does quite as well

The Bed: Is it the Best in the World?

The Allegris suite converts into what might be the most comfortable flatbed in the industry]. Between the added mattress topper, the high-quality duvet, and the sheer space, I didn’t want to get out. You could easily fit two people in there if you wanted to cuddle!

The Verdict

Lufthansa’s New First Class (Allegris): 9.5/10

Despite all the hiccups, they have delivered a phenomenal product. The seat is a game-changer, the Munich lounge is elite, and the service was flawless.

Lufthansa’s Old First Class: 7/10

It’s still a classic experience with a great crew, but the lack of privacy and the poor service at the Frankfurt terminal make it feel dated.

If you have the choice, go for Munich and the A350. It is exactly what a first-class experience should be.
