The Turkish Airline That Actually Smiles: My Surprising Journey with Sun Express

Flight Details

  • Airline: Sun Express
  • Class: Economy
  • Route: Leipzig (LEJ) to Cairo (CAI) via Antalya (ANT)
  • Aircraft: Boeing 737-800

When people think of Turkish aviation, the first name that comes to mind is Turkish Airlines. But after 30+ flights with the national carrier, I’ve often been put off by what I call their “hooligan-like” attitude and lack of a simple smile.

That’s why my recent trip from Leipzig, Germany to Cairo, Egypt via Antalya was such a revelation. I flew Sun Express, a joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, and for the first time in years, I saw a Turkish cabin crew member who actually seemed happy to be there.

The Leipzig Start: Cargo Hubs and History

My journey began at 5:00 AM on a German train bound for Leipzig. Leipzig Airport is a fascinating place for aviation geeks, it’s a massive DHL cargo hub, and you can still see Antonov 124s that have been seized since the start of the Russian invasion.

Review: Sun Express Boeing 737 (Leipzig to Antalya)

The first leg cost me $375 USD for the total trip to Cairo. Sun Express operates a fleet of over 80 Boeing 737s in a standard 180-seat configuration.

  • The Crew: This was the highlight. From the moment I stepped on board, I was greeted with massive, genuine smiles. It’s a stark contrast to the “Istanbul attitude” I’ve grown used to.
  • The Seat: It’s a tight holiday-leisure configuration. Legroom is limited, and cleanliness could be improved. I found crumbs and packaging from the previous passenger on my seat.
  • The Food: I pre-purchased a meal, but honestly, it was below average and very dry. If you’re flying Sun Express, stick to the on-board snacks or eat before you board.

Transit in Antalya: The “Russian Shopping Mall”

Antalya Airport has become a unique hub. Due to international sanctions, it has essentially turned into a high-end shopping mall for Russian travelers who can’t buy iPhones or PlayStations back home. I was likely the only passenger in the entire airport connecting to Egypt that day!

Leg 2: Front Row Comfort (Antalya to Cairo)

For the short hop to Cairo, I moved to the front row, which felt worlds better than my previous seat in 33F. The extra legroom is worth every penny on this airline. Once again, the crew was incredibly kind and professional, proving that the great service on the first leg wasn’t just a fluke.

Arriving in Cairo is always a challenge. It’s one of the few places on Earth where you are immediately met with harassment, shouts, and money-hungry taxi drivers trying to rip you off.I managed to negotiate a $10 ride to my hotel, but it’s never a relaxing experience.

The Verdict: 8/10

For a leisure/charter airline, Sun Express is brilliant.

  • Pros: Exceptional crew, smooth transit, and decent pricing for long-distance connections.
  • Cons: Terrible legroom in the back and mediocre food.

If you’re looking for a cheap, friendly way to get from Europe to the Middle East or North Africa, I highly recommend them. Just remember to book the front row!
