Taking a trip back to one of the most extreme, isolated, and unforgettable adventures ever taken, sailing thousands of kilometers into the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean to set foot on Tristan da Cunha
The Journey to the End of the Earth
Getting to Tristan da Cunha isn’t something you do on a whim:
- 14 Days at Sea: Starting from Ushuaia, Argentina, the journey required two full weeks of sailing across some of the roughest ocean waters on the planet..
- No Deep-Water Port: Because the island lacks a deep-water harbor, expedition ships cannot dock. Passengers must land via small Zodiac boats, and due to violent waves, nearly 40% of all landing attempts fail!
Life in Edinburgh of the Seven Seas
The island’s single settlement, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, is home to roughly 250 residents representing just eight core families.
- Meeting the Local Law: A cup of tea with Conrad Glass, who served as the island’s sole police officer for 37 years while also managing customs and immigration. His main duty? Giving verbal warnings for speeding, he never had to arrest anyone!
- The Great Return (1963): When a volcanic eruption threatened the settlement in 1961, the entire population evacuated to the UK. But after finding British life too hectic, 99% of the islanders chose to return home to their remote outpost in 1963.
- The Emergency Hammer & Ratting Day: Instead of an emergency phone line, islanders signal hazards by striking a heavy metal hammer against a steel cylinder. That same hammer strike is also used to call every resident out for mandatory “Ratting Day” to help control the local rodent population.
Island Highlights
- The Albatross Bar: Grabbing a $3 cold South African Lion Lager at the most remote pub on Earth.
- St. Mary’s School: Checking out the local schoolhouse, which serves around 20 total students with average class sizes of just 4 kids per age group.
- The Supermarket: Browsing the island’s single store, which relies on supply ships arriving every two months for fresh produce and basic supplies.
