Flight Details
- Airline: Finnair
- Class: Business Class (“Air Lounge” / Non-Reclining Seat)
- Route: Munich (MUC) to Helsinki (HEL) & Helsinki (HEL) to London Heathrow (LHR)
- Aircraft: Airbus A350-900
Finnair’s business class product divides the industry. Travelers either love it or hate it, largely because of one defining feature: the seat doesn’t recline.
Some consider Finnair to have the best business class seat in the sky, while others call it the worst. I jumped on board their long-haul configured Airbus A350 operating within Europe to find out where I stand.
Ground Experience & Connections
- Intra-European Widebody Operations: It’s a rare treat to catch a widebody Airbus A350 operating standard European routes between Munich, Helsinki, and London.
- The “Business Light” Catch:Â Depending on your fare category, perks can vary. For instance, my connecting itinerary in Helsinki required a tight bus gate transfer from a non-Schengen arrival, and basic business tiers may exclude lounge access. Always check your specific ticket tier!
Cabin & Seat: The Infamous “Air Lounge”
This is where all the debate happens.
- First Impressions:Â Stepping into the 1-2-1 configured cabin, the seat looks remarkably spacious, clean, and private.
- The Non-Reclining Concept:Â Because the shell is fixed and doesn’t mechanically recline, you lounge and sleep by shifting positions with custom infill cushions, mimicking a plush couch.
- In Bed Mode: When fully flat for sleeping, it turns out to be surprisingly roomy and comfortable—far more flexible than standard rigid shells. I’m officially calling myself Team Love This Seat.
Catering & Service
- The Meal Service:Â On the hop from Munich to Helsinki, a hot meal featuring chicken and potatoes was served. While choice is limited on intra-European hops, the flavors were fantastic, paired with gorgeous glassware and delicious traditional Finnish bread.
- Signature Drinks:Â No Finnair flight is complete without their signature blueberry juice.
- Cabin Crew: The crew were exceptionally warm, highly professional, and eager to deliver great service—completely shattering any stereotypes of Scandinavian coldness.
Pros & Cons
| Pros | Cons |
| Incredibly spacious and private “Air Lounge” shell | The fixed, non-reclining concept takes some getting used to |
| Flying long-haul widebody A350 comfort on European hops | Limited meal options on shorter regional sectors |
| Fantastic, highly attentive cabin crew | Tight connection bus gates in Helsinki can be stressful |
| Excellent sleep comfort once fully flat |
The Verdict
Finnair’s unique approach to business class is a massive win in my book.
Normalizing widebody comfort within Europe, backed by an incredible crew and a genuinely innovative seat concept that gives you massive amounts of lounging space, makes this one of the standout premium products in Europe. If you haven’t tried the shell seat yet, it’s well worth experiencing for yourself.
